Wires on the fan

Fans with a remote receiver often have a different set of wires between the receiver and the motor, which the manufacturer's instructions describe.
Wires in the ceiling
The wires in your ceiling box come from the house wiring. The most common are:
- Two-conductor cable (black, white, ground). One wall switch controls everything. The fan speed and light are controlled by pull chains or a remote receiver.
- Three-conductor cable (black, red, white, ground). Black powers the fan, red powers the light and two switches can control them separately.
Older houses may have different colors or wire types, and wire colors can be misused. Always test before assuming.
Typical connections
- Ground wire to ground wire
- White to white (neutral)
- Black (fan) to the switched hot (black)
- Blue (light) to the switched hot for the light, which is often the same black wire on a two-wire setup or the red on a three-wire setup
Every connection is made inside the box with approved wire connectors and secured properly.
Why wall switch off is not enough
Turning off the wall switch does not guarantee the wires are dead. Depending on the wiring, the box can still be live. Turn off the breaker and test the wires with a voltage tester before touching them.
When wiring does not match
Call an electrician if:
- There are more or fewer wires than expected
- Wires are brittle, burned or crumbling
- There is no ground wire
- You see aluminum wiring
- Someone has spliced wires in the ceiling without a box
