What a fixture-to-fan conversion involves
- Remove the light fixture and check the box, wiring and switch.
- Replace the box with a fan-rated box or brace, since a light box is not designed to carry a fan.
- Adapt the wiring. A light usually has a black and a white wire. A fan with a light needs a hot for the motor, a hot for the light, a neutral and a ground.
- Choose the controls. A single switch can control power to both, with a pull chain or remote for the light and fan. If a three-conductor cable is there, two switches are possible.
- Install and balance the fan and test all functions.
Will my existing wiring work?
In most cases, yes. A two-conductor cable (black, white, ground) works with any fan that uses a remote receiver or pull chains. A three-conductor cable gives more control. What we look for in the ceiling box is wire condition, grounding and whether the switch is a standard toggle or a dimmer. A dimmer switch cannot be used on a fan motor, because a standard dimmer can make an AC fan motor hum and overheat. We replace the dimmer with a proper switch or fan control when needed.

Before you convert: check these
- Ceiling height. A fan needs blades at least 7 feet above the floor. Low ceilings need a hugger fan.
- Room size. The fan should match the room. See our size guide.
- Light output. A fan with a light kit produces less light than many fixtures. If the fixture was your main light, choose a fan with a bright LED kit or add other lighting.
- Clearance to walls and doors. Blades need about 18 inches of clearance to walls.
