Adding ceiling fans to a new home
Builders typically pre-wire a fan-rated box in the primary bedroom and great room, and sometimes the other bedrooms. Other rooms often have a simple light. That leaves you with three common situations:
- Rooms with a fan-rated box that only need a fan hung. This is the simplest job. See ceiling fan installation.
- Rooms with a light fixture that you want to convert. See light fixture to ceiling fan conversion.
- Rooms with no ceiling wiring like a covered patio or a room with recessed lighting. See new ceiling fan wiring.
Higher ceilings and open plans
Newer floor plans often have taller ceilings, big open kitchens and great rooms that need a bigger fan. We recommend a fan size based on the total square footage of the open area, and a downrod length that puts the blades at a comfortable height. Our ceiling fan size guide shows how.
Smart homes and new technology
New-home buyers are often building out a smart home. We can install fans with Wi-Fi control and voice assistant integration, and pair them with wall controls. See smart ceiling fan installation.
Customer-supplied fans
Many Cooley Station homeowners buy their fans from a retailer and hire us to install. That is fine with us. We check the fan against your room and box before we start. See installing a fan you bought.

Frequently asked questions
My new home has no fan in the bedroom. Can you add one?
Yes. If there is a fan-rated box, it is a quick installation. If there is only a light, we can convert it. If there is no wiring, we can add it.
Do I need a permit to add a fan to a new home?
Simple swaps usually do not. New wiring may. We tell you what applies.
