Why fan-rated boxes matter
The National Electrical Code requires outlet boxes that support ceiling fans to be listed for that use and marked accordingly. Standard listed fan boxes are rated for fans up to 35 pounds. Boxes for heavier fans have a marked maximum weight, and no box may be the sole support of a fan heavier than 70 pounds. Many modern fans weigh between 20 and 50 pounds, so the box label and the fan's weight both matter.
A box that is not fan-rated may hold for months or years, then loosen from vibration. That is the usual cause of a fan that develops a wobble that balancing cannot fix.
Signs your ceiling box is not fan-rated
- The fan wobbles even after the blades are balanced
- The canopy shifts, clicks or moves when the fan runs
- There is a hairline crack in the ceiling around the canopy
- The box is attached with only one or two small screws to a piece of drywall or a thin bracket
- The box was installed for a light fixture and no "acceptable for fan support" label is visible
- The fan moves or feels loose when you push the canopy
We can usually tell from a quick look at the box. If we are not sure, we replace it, because the cost of upgrading a box is far smaller than the cost of a fan that falls.
Types of fan-rated boxes we install
Retrofit expandable brace
The most common fix in finished ceilings. A steel bar is inserted through the fan hole, expanded until it locks between two joists or trusses and a fan-rated box is mounted to the bar. It works with no attic access from above.
New-work fan box screwed to framing
When we have attic access or the ceiling is open, we attach a fan-rated box directly to the framing. It is rigid and permanent.
Heavy-duty and heavy fan boxes
Boxes marked for heavier fans give you a higher weight rating for large fans, up to the code maximum.
Vaulted and sloped ceiling boxes

How we upgrade the box
- Power off and remove the old fan or fixture.
- Inspect the ceiling framing and choose brace or direct mount based on what is above the ceiling.
- Install the new fan-rated box or brace and confirm it is solid under load.
- Reconnect wiring in the new box with proper connectors and grounding.
- Hang the fan and test for movement before leaving.
